I never noticed until today. Every weekday morning I go to work, stopping to have my coffee near the beach. It is quiet, except for the surf, and the salty breeze helps to shake me out of sleepy haze. But there he is, like he is every morning, standing erect in his black suit on the oceanfront. He placed his briefcase to the side and stood waiting, looking out past the surf to the horizon waiting for the gulls to appear. Soon they congregated around him, swarming above him as he tossed crumbs on the sand and larger pieces of bread into the air. Occasionally, a gull would snatch a piece from his hand and fly away only to be chased by others wanting their share of the prize. After the pieces of bread and crumbs were gone, so were the gulls, and this little man picked up his briefcase and walked away like every other morning.
I decided to follow him.
It turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
