The young farmer scooped up some soil squeezing it into a clump with his calloused hand. The soil looked good. It was dark and rich in appearance, and moist to the touch. Everything on the surface looked as if there will be a great crop this year.

Last weeks soil analysis showed something disturbing though. This soil will not grow anything. Any plants that may start quickly die. Similar result have shown themselves in vast areas on North America and Europe. There are no micro-organisms present. Some were introduced into they soil, but they also died. Nothing in the samples show indications of toxins or other contamination. It’s just that nothing will grow.
